An Introduction to the Hakomi Method: Mindfulness-centred, Somatic Psychotherapy

For a number of reasons, I have always wanted to be a person who is helpful to others. While completing my last year at the University of Massachusetts with a B.A. in Psychology, I was introduced to Hakomi Body-Centered Psychotherapy. I left Boston and moved to Boulder in 1983 to train in The Hakomi Method with Ron Kurtz and a small staff of master therapists. I began my private practice in 1987, the same year that I attained my graduate degree from Naropa University. My experience at Naropa provided me with a perfect balance to my Hakomi Skills. While Hakomi offered a very concrete format for psychotherapy, my studies at Naropa added a certain peacefulness, cheerfulness, courage and even elegance in facing my own suffering and the suffering of others. The meditation requirement grounded in me a certain optimism in working with people and in my own life. Since then, I have added to my practice a License in Marriage and Family Therapy, studies in Family Constellations, Group Leadership, and Certifications in Trauma work that include EMDR, Brainspotting and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy. I am certified in Relational Life Couples Therapy, created by Terrance Real. I am always adding techniques and innovations in psychotherapy that I feel enhance my skills and will be truly beneficial to the people who come to me for help. In 1996, I became a trainer for the Hakomi Institute and now lead trainings and teach workshops throughout the U.S., Canada and abroad. I also supervise several graduate students here in Boulder, in other parts of the country, and in Canada. I truly enjoy this combination of therapy, post-graduate study and teaching. On a personal level, since my 20’s I have lived an adventurous, fun, love and friendship-filled, life. However, this would never have happened had I not gotten help..... I am grateful to all my healers and mentors who saved me from a life of burden, anxiety, hurt and resentment. I am grateful to myself for blindly but faithfully falling into their helpful hands.
