Embodying Anti-Violence: Using Values-Based Pedagogy to Teach Consent through Martial Arts

Dr. Alex Channon is a senior lecturer in physical education and sport studies at the University of Brighton, UK. He has published numerous academic articles on topics related to martial arts, adopting a sociological perspective on issues including gender relations, violence, risk-taking, medical care of athletes, and media representations of sport. He is the co-founder of _Love Fighting Hate Violence_, an anti-violence initiative aimed at teaching positive values through martial arts activities. He has edited three academic books: _Global Perspectives on Women in Combat Sports _(Palgrave Macmillan, 2015); _Sex Integration in Sport and Physical Culture _(Routledge, 2017); and _Teaching with Sociological Imagination in Higher and Further Education _(Springer, 2018). Alex sits on the advisory board of the Martial Arts Studies Research Network and is a member of the Special Advisory Group for the International Centre of Martial Arts for Youth Development and Engagement (ICM) under the auspices of UNESCO.
