In this current moment, there is increasing awareness about inequality and harm taking place in various ways, on a global scale. How can we address this, especially given the context of the pandemic? As Rae Johnson notes, in Embodied Social Justice, it’s important to ensure that our efforts for social change go beyond policy, and extend into how we relate to one another in our daily lives. Fortunately, we can use our agency to create positive change on a community level, by beginning to work on ourselves. At the heart of all forms of oppression, is the embodied domination of a group with social power, at the expense of another group who are subordinated, with less social power. If we can become aware of how we enact domination through our bodies, in overt and subtle ways, we can begin to rebalance power and re-pattern behaviour that perpetuate forms of oppression such as racism, ableism, sexism and transphobia. Camille will explore how embodied domination relates to inequality, then lead some exercises to begin working through this in our own lives.
