This presentation will look at how trauma affects us, focussing particularly on the way in
which the fight or flight response results in a type of memory which is radically different
from normal memory, and on how these trauma-type memories are a key factor in many of
the symptoms experienced by people suffering from PTSD.
In the second part of the presentation we look at Eye Movement Desensitization and
Reprocessing (EMDR), a form of trauma therapy developed by the America psychologist
Francine Shapiro in the 1980s. We will look at how EMDR evolved and at the basic
therapeutic techniques involved. The presentation will end with a question and answer
section for attendees.
